“Am I actually ready for APPSC Group 1 Prelims?”

This is where understanding the syllabus, developing a subject-wise strategy and testing your preparation become crucial.

APPSC Group 1 Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The APPSC Group 1 Preliminary Examination is not a single-paper test. It consists of two objective-type papers, making both General Studies and General Aptitude important for qualification.

Paper I – General Studies

120 Questions | 120 Marks | 120 Minutes

Paper I contains four major sections:

A. History and Culture – 30 Marks
B. Constitution, Polity, Social Justice & International Relations – 30 Marks
C. Indian & Andhra Pradesh Economy and Planning – 30 Marks
D. Geography – 30 Marks

This distribution gives aspirants an important strategic message: Paper I requires balanced preparation.

Depending excessively on one favourite subject while neglecting another can create a serious scoring gap.

APPSC Group 1 History and Culture Syllabus

History preparation begins with the Indus Valley Civilisation and Vedic Age and extends to post-Independence India.

Ancient History includes the Mahajanapadas, Jainism, Buddhism, Magadha, Mauryas, foreign invasions, Kushans, Satavahanas, Sangam Age, Sungas and Gupta Empire.

Candidates should particularly understand administration, society, economy, religion, literature, science, art and architecture rather than memorising isolated facts.

Regional and South Indian History includes the Badami Chalukyas, Eastern Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kalyani Chalukyas, Cholas, Hoysalas, Yadavas, Kakatiyas and Reddis.

Medieval India covers the Delhi Sultanate, Vijayanagara Empire, Mughal Empire, Bhakti Movement and Sufism.

Modern India includes European trading companies, British expansion, Governor-Generals and Viceroys, the Revolt of 1857, socio-religious reform movements, Indian National Movement and revolutionary activities.

The syllabus gives specific importance to Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose and Dr B.R. Ambedkar, along with post-Independence consolidation and reorganisation of states.

APPSC Group 1 Polity Syllabus

The Polity section begins with the evolution of the Constitution, Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties, Directive Principles, constitutional amendments and Basic Structure.

Candidates should prepare Parliament and State Legislatures, their structure, powers, functions and privileges.

Federalism is another important area covering Centre-State relations, distribution and devolution of powers and finances, and local governance.

The syllabus further covers constitutional authorities, Panchayati Raj, public policy, governance, statutory bodies, regulatory bodies and quasi-judicial bodies.

Social Justice includes issues concerning women, children, SCs, STs and human rights.

International Relations covers India’s foreign policy, international institutions, organisations and forums, along with major national and state government policies and programmes.

APPSC Group 1 Economy Syllabus

Economy requires a combination of conceptual knowledge and current affairs.

Candidates should begin with the basic characteristics of the Indian economy, economic planning, NITI Aayog, economic growth, distributive justice, human development and sustainable development.

Core areas include National Income, GDP-related concepts, demography, poverty, inequality, unemployment, rural development and urban development.

Agriculture covers irrigation, agricultural inputs, agricultural policy, land reforms, agricultural credit, MSP, food security and agrarian issues.

Industry and external sector topics include industrial policy, Make in India, Start-up India, Stand-Up India, SEZs, industrial corridors, LPG reforms, international trade, Balance of Payments and WTO.

Financial-sector preparation should include the RBI, monetary policy, banking, NPAs, financial markets, SEBI, taxation, GST, Finance Commission, public debt, public expenditure, fiscal policy and Budget.

Andhra Pradesh Economy – A Crucial Area

For APPSC, studying the Indian economy alone is not sufficient.

Candidates must separately prepare the Andhra Pradesh economy after the 2014 bifurcation.

Important areas include the impact of bifurcation on state finances and resources, river-water issues, irrigation, infrastructure, power, transport, IT, e-governance, agriculture, industry, social sectors, urbanisation, skill development and employment.

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 is particularly important.

Aspirants should understand the economic issues associated with bifurcation, revenue-related concerns, development of backward regions and other commitments and disputes arising from reorganisation.

APPSC Group 1 Geography Syllabus

Geography covers World, India and Andhra Pradesh.

General Geography includes the Solar System, motions of the Earth, seasons, Earth’s internal structure, landforms, atmosphere, climate, air masses, fronts and oceans.

Physical Geography includes earthquakes, landslides, drainage systems, monsoon, natural vegetation, soils, rocks, minerals, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

Social Geography covers population, density, growth, sex ratio, literacy, occupational structure, tribes, migration, urbanisation and metropolitan regions.

Economic Geography includes agriculture, industries, services, natural resources, transport and trade.

APPSC Group 1 Paper II – General Aptitude

Paper II also contains:

120 Questions | 120 Marks | 120 Minutes

The syllabus covers three broad dimensions:

General Mental & Psychological Abilities

Science & Technology

Current Events of Regional, National and International Importance

General Mental Ability for APPSC Group 1

Mental Ability preparation includes logical reasoning, analytical ability, number series, coding-decoding, relations, Venn diagrams, clocks, calendars and age problems.

Quantitative aptitude includes ratio and proportion, averages, percentages, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, time and work, time-speed-distance, number systems, HCF and LCM.

Candidates also need to prepare geometry, mensuration, algebra, data interpretation, data analysis, data sufficiency and probability.

A distinctive part of the APPSC syllabus is its emphasis on Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, interpersonal skills, decision-making, critical thinking, problem-solving, empathy and stress management.

Science and Technology for APPSC Group 1

Science & Technology should not be approached like a school science examination.

The emphasis should be on concept + application + current development.

The syllabus covers India’s science and technology ecosystem, important institutions, policies and prominent Indian scientists.

ICT includes e-governance, digital technologies, cyber security and government programmes involving information technology.

Space and Defence includes ISRO, Indian satellite programmes, remote sensing, navigation satellites, communication satellites and DRDO.

Energy covers India’s energy requirements and policies, with special emphasis on solar, wind and nuclear energy.

Environment includes climate change, biodiversity, environmental laws, international agreements, pollution, forests, wildlife, disaster management and India’s climate initiatives.

The syllabus also covers Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Genetic Engineering, including their applications and ethical, legal and social dimensions.

Current Affairs Can Change Your APPSC Prelims Score

Current affairs should not be prepared separately from the syllabus.

When RBI changes monetary policy, connect it with Economy.

When ISRO launches a mission, connect it with Science & Technology.

When the Supreme Court delivers an important constitutional judgment, connect it with Polity.

When Andhra Pradesh announces a new policy, scheme or infrastructure project, connect it with AP Economy and Governance.

This approach transforms current affairs from hundreds of disconnected news stories into syllabus-linked examination material.

Notification Is Out. But Are You Prelims Ready?

There is a common trap after every major competitive examination notification.

Aspirants start collecting more material.

New books. New PDFs. New Telegram notes. New YouTube playlists.

But the real problem may not be a shortage of material.

It may be a shortage of revision and testing.

You may have studied Polity three months ago—but how much can you recall today?

You may have completed Ancient History—but can you handle a three-statement elimination question?

You may understand inflation—but can you differentiate between closely framed Economy options under exam pressure?

There is only one reliable way to find out:

Take a test.

More Than a Scholarship – Get a Reality Check

The biggest advantage of taking the scholarship test is not the discount.

It is the reality check.

Your score can reveal whether you have a knowledge gap, revision gap, accuracy gap or examination-strategy gap.

Suppose you score poorly in History despite completing the syllabus. Your problem may be retention.

Suppose you know Polity concepts but repeatedly choose between two close options. Your problem may be elimination.

Suppose you know most answers but lose marks through unnecessary guesses. Your problem may be risk management.

Each requires a different solution.

That is why serious test analysis can sometimes teach you more about your preparation than another week of passive reading.

A Simple APPSC Group 1 Prelims Preparation Cycle

From this stage onwards, follow one repeatable process:

STUDY → REVISE → TEST → ANALYSE → CORRECT → RETEST

Your aim should not simply be:

“I completed the syllabus.”

Your aim should be:

“I can convert what I studied into marks.”
